SHANKHA GHOSH

Shankha Ghosh is arguably the most eminent living Bangla poet today. Also a scholar in the language and an expert on Tagore, he has been writing poetry for more than 60 years, putting on display his unobtrusive but extraordinary control over Bangla. His poetry sweeps over a wide swathe from the sociopolitical to the deeply personal, combining powerful expression with subtlety of thought and vividness of images whose sources range from the city he lives in – Kolkata – to the wide scope of history. He has won multiple awards for his poetry and his criticism, including, most recently, the Jnanpith Award for 2016.
