Poet’s Note

It was examination time. Having completed my quick answers to the long questions, I sat back and stared at the silent classroom of heads bowed in docile concentration. I was ten years old and my mind was an ocean of curiosity. That was when my first scribble crawled out and squatted on the back of my question paper. That was the beginning.

Then there was no end! Writing became a compulsion through the years, through seventy summers until today. Except… except those scribbles preferred nesting in the closet where my forays into secret forests were shared with imaginary readers. Through those years, those reclusive scribbles, had danced to the rhythm of contemporary life, waltzed with nature, swirled with serene thoughts and marched with political protests.

Sometime during my sixtieth orbit around the sun, those subterranean scribbles shed their hermit skin and caught the light. My first book Fuse, appeared and got taught at the Towson University in Maryland, US. It has a Chinese edition and poems from it were translated into Urdu, Arabic, French and Greek. The second book, When Seeing Is Believing, emerged soon after, poems responding to art; art being another passion that hovered over me like an angel. The third book is slowly trudging up the mountain, hoping to reach a wayside publisher.
