Tryin’ my best to work up this grin
But all’a my dreams seem outta my range
Sure is a shame the way money spends
Spent most of this life tied up in my skin
Don’t want nobody to think that I’m strange—
Doin’ my best to keep up this grin
Gotta admit that my wallet’s gone thin
A little bit miffed, but I hate to complain
Low-down dirty shame the way money spends
Startin’ to feel that ol’ heartbroke again
The way the way goes, ain’ no need to explain
Most days you just gotta turn up the grin
I come up for air but come down with the bends
Been here awhile—not sure why I came
Ain’t it a shame the way money grins
I liked the beginning but can’t stand the end
Counting the hours and forgetting their names
Still tryin’ my best to call up a grin
Got two or three things I’d like to amend
But my attitude isn’t likely to change
You know it’s a crime the way money lends
Tried a few things to be like other men
Swallowed some lies; now the lies are to blame
Sure is a shame the way money spends
Did all I could to prop up this grin
