VARIATIONS ON WAKA: STILLS FROM SANSKRITI – EXTRACTS by Sudeep Sen

Note: This poem-sequence using the classical Japanese waka-form was initially written as a site-specific piece of creative work mapping the geographical terrain of Mr O P Jain’s Sanskriti Foundation on the outskirts of Delhi. The overall production includes collaborative work by British artists — Jenny Lewis and Frances Kiernan — involving innovative theatre, composed original music, art, collographs, book sculpture, experimental photography, digital video projection, and performance.

AMALTAS
choka

    broken pillars lie
defeated, scattered around

    aimlessly in mud —
different lengths retelling

    different stories.
huddled in a heap amid

    a weathered concrete
grave, Amaltas germinates
bringing life to the ruins.
