SEAMSTRESS by Menka Shivdasani

It must be tailored
to fit exactly;
no sagging folds,
no creases where they show.
So stretch your skin and let
the chain stitch run
in gentle colours of green and black,
double lines running through
and through,
to hold it all together.

It’s good for you:
keeps the fabric taut
and bones in place;
tendons tight,
the muscles lean;
but don’t forget
the decorative touch,
that bit of lace
where the cleavage splits.

Make sure the loose ends
are covered well
as the needle glints
and dives into your flesh.

A few more stitches,
and there you are—
perfect for the ramp.
