Poetry at Sangam showcases poetry in English and translations as well as essays on poetics and news of new releases.
Kala Krishnan Ramesh lives and works in Bangalore. She writes only in English but can understand and speak three south Indian languages, of which Tamil is her favourite. She loves the sound and ethos of Tamil – at a distance – coming to her through film, film songs, Sangam poetry in translation, the poetry of modern Tamil’s many women poets and the vast corpus of devotional poetry in the language. To the question of whether she would like to write in a vernacular, her answer is No, because those are not the languages in which she learned to craft, at the same time, she knows that it is, without doubt, the great springs of the south Indian vernaculars that gives her poetry its currents.
