DELHI AS I AM by Abhay K.

I am the city of cities.

A city of invaders, conquerors
merchants, immigrants—
they twinkle on my horizon
as words written on a palimpsest.

I am the city of ruins.

Look carefully at my
mausoleums, cemeteries, tombs
count them all if you can
how many lie buried here
who ruled me once.

I am the city of truth, peace and Justice.

My streets bear these names
yet the truth is rapists roam in peace
in the city and my women seek justice
day after day in the city courts.

* Truth (Satya) Peace (Shanti) and Justice (Nyaya) are names of streets in Delhi.
