AVE CANE by Tyrone Williams

When they found her amputated
foot we remembered
who you

                                                    might have been

across the street
she stutter-stepped.

He raised our hand as if to wave

salute away. It went on his way
as if to call on someone else

                                                    then stopped

turned. I turned
too late to see them turn
fail to fall

                                                    crutch got in the way.
