POETICS by Shankha Ghosh

(Translated from the Bengali by Arunava Sinha.)

Is that what I said yesterday?
Perhaps, but I’m not saying it now
Can you prove the I of yesterday
Is the same I today, even now?

A human being is not just a rock
Unchanging and unmoved all his life
Sometimes he must turn away his face
His heart must take wing when the time is ripe

Yesterday I said I prefer mountains
It may be the sea that I want today
There’s no real conflict between them
I can grasp the entire world this way

What’s the use of matching these two days?
I’ll think of all that another day, maybe
For now let me ponder over this
I’m sick – then why am I so happy?
