Afterwards by Les Wicks

We race through towns
where the bomb craters
are now tourist photo opportunities.
Kosovo plans its future.

The trees hang around the hills acting
nonchalant & innocent.
There may still be mines.
Three peaks back the shocking blue
of the NATO base swimming pool
squats within its compound.

All the mosques & wineries are refurbished
we ask about it, our guide shrugs with a smile says
Allah gave them the best grapes for a reason.

The war now is with economics.
No one speaks much about the past
that teeters on the now.
Everyone is fighting back
& I am privileged to watch.
