Things I found in my Mother’s Drawer

A half-finished crochet lace
Sewing threads, needles, thimbles
A rusted tin, coloured buttons scattered at its base.

A drawstring inserter, a roll of drawstring
Socks with toes
Post mastectomy bra

A pack of cards, a Hanuman Chalisa
A scrapbook made of Ganeshas
cut from wedding cards

A plastic pouch inside a plastic pouch
containing the key to the bank locker
A melamine polished box of loose change

The pink crimped satin toilet bag I’d gifted her
Handkerchiefs
Two dysfunctional alarm clocks

Her specs, two spare cases
An empty ladies’ wallet
A carved rose quartz Ganesha, faintly smiling.
