VINCHU / The Scorpion

Translated from original Marathi by Anjali Purohit

Oh! The scorpion has stung! He’s stung! He’s stung! Ho!

Lust and rage-the scorpion-has stung
The body breaks into a dark sweat.

Oh! The scorpion’s stung! He’s stung! He’s stung! Ho!

All five senses are distraught
This will be the end of me
Every bit of my being is on fire!

The human scorpion is most dire
She’s hit me with her sting
My body is in agony!

The remedy for this scorpion – deflate ego and pride
Apply the holy ash of virtue
Watch the scorpion’s venom rapidly subside.

By giving this essential antidote
But for a slight residual throb
All dark, destructive tendencies were dispelled
Thus did Janardan bestow peace.
