How does one write poetry about music? When it comes to Hindustani classical music, it’s almost impossible to capture in words the essence or ras, the aura, the aroma of ragas, divided into the time cycle of a day and spread across the seasons. For me, it’s as impossible as writing about my mother. In this cycle of poems, I write about six ragas and my personal association with them, sometimes depicting, sometimes questioning their visual and sensory depictions in texts and in the Raagmala paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. These poems are deeply personal and yet mythological, just like the raga music itself that affects its listeners at a very subjective and spiritual level.
