SALT RANGE by Adrian Husain

Hills, verticals of rock
above
sheer, perpendicular
and all around
shrubs, stones, trees – midget growths –

a whole landscape bristling
furious with color
gun-metal grey, red, ash
and the in-between shades
mauve, at times purple
risen from the iron
heart of earth
belched from the seabed

A conflagration within
conflict raging
a war in stone
a falling out of gods

The eye arrested
calmed
in breast of rock
and a persistent wish

to be annihilated –
to be this –
to be stone
