UMER ISMAIL

Umer Ismail, born in 1990, was a poet, fiction writer and musician from Lahore, Pakistan. His diverse interests included philosophy, theology, mysticism and sociology. For some time, he was active in the country’s Marxist groups and identified as a feminist. As an artist, he was brutally honest and public about his struggle with addiction and mental health. His poetry deals with mystical evocations of nature, intertwined with his personal memories and experiences. Although he didn’t publish much during his lifetime, his work was deeply appreciated by literary peers he interacted with. An issue of the South Asian literary journal City – edited by Sophia Naz and Ajmal Kamal – was dedicated to his memory. He passed away in 2019.
