Born in Punjab in present-day Pakistan, Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) is one of the subcontinent’s most prominent writers who wrote extensively in Punjabi, across many genres including poetry, fiction, essays and autobiography. Recipient of the 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award, Pritam’s work is one of those most lasting and piercing literary responses to the violence of Partition, and is remarkably eloquent on subjects such as love, death and loss.
