THE VISIT by Anitha Thampi

I come from a far-away planet where a thousand suns rise and set. In the unending days
in light
during the eternal dance of life

one day you came
and called
I came away with you instantly. To earth,
to the house in the city
where you reside.

I have not seen the dark
I discern through your words
the stars, cool moons, sleep.
I have not known the social conventions observed by humans on land:
passive violence –
love’s unintelligible complexity
nature that gets caught and blends in the eye that blinks blinded by the light…
forced sex!

I dance instinctively, incessantly oh look
there is only one sun in the sky it descends

light diminishes it turns cold

Trapped in the night that nurtures you terrified, every day
I die of fear.
