Human Spiders by Sarifa Khatoon Chowdhury

We are a community of spiders now.
In the mournful cries of insects
caught in the cobweb of our dreams,
we, sadists, derive infinite pleasures.

Hardly anyone remembers
that we were once humans.
I couldn’t tell when I got trapped
in this self-knit mesh of silver gossamer.

The net
it’s growing bigger
it’s getting thicker
hidden from each other’s sight
the distance between us grows by the day

We learnt a lot from spiders,
say, how to maintain a safe distance
from our own kind etc.

We are human spiders now.
No one can see the other.
