Naseem Shafaie, the first woman recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award in Kashmiri, was born in 1952 in Srinagar. She holds an MA in Kashmiri, and also knows Urdu and English. She started writing poetry during her college days and her first collection of poetry Darie-Che-Muthrith (Open Windows) was published in 1999. Her second collection of poems Na Thsay Na Aks (Neither Shadow Nor Reflection) reverberate with genuine creative verve. The collection displays a remarkable felicity of language and is a vigorous imaginative embodiment of modern and feminist sensibility. She retired as a Professor from the Higher Education Department of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Her Naats and Hussaini poems are famous among Kashmiri people. Many of her poems, research papers and translations are included in school and undergraduate syllabus the J&K Education Board. She is the recipient of several awards, including Bakhshi Memorial Award, the Sharf-e-Kamraz award, Award of Honour by State Board of School Education (2008), Kashmir Women Leadership Award by Space Communications (2009) and Tagore Literature Award (2009). Her poetry has been translated in English, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu.
