KT 9: Kaymanar by Vivek Narayanan

She’s a mother now    the dark one
Her body’s gaunt    a single flower clasped
tightly  unwithered    in the vase
Out of green leaf    shoot up    the round-stemmed blue lilies
Shoals of fish     in dark backwaters   in the rising flood
like the eyes of women    diving into tanks
The coolness the cruelty     of the man on the bank
Ashamed     she comes to hide and play among us
