Tlapayajtotomej ome
Ijtik on xochimej uan ijtokauan chikiritsin
kinchijchiuaj intepasoltsitsiuan kan inkoneuan
uajnokechteketsaj kualistokej kenejke notajtsin
kitlakuijkuilia iajos

Swallows II
Within the depths of chikiritsin 3 vines
they construct their nest; their young
reach out their necks to watch my father
prepare the garlic cloves and the pachol 4
of purple onion
because those wings, the colour of night,
mark the time of sowing

NOTES
(3) chikiritsin: Vigna caracalla; Snail Bean. A vine bearing edible purple-white flowers which resemble the combs of a rooster. It blooms during the month of December.
(4) pachol: a seed mixture containing onion, chilli or tomato, among others, which is sown into prepared soil between other plants.
