YOUNG LADY WHO IS GOING PLACES by Suchitra Hansda

Young Miss, you’re going places.

Keep a few things in mind.

Open your eyes to the right and the wrong.

This path is full of holes

So you watch every step of yours.

There are fences of thorn by the road,

You’ll get entangled if you aren’t careful.

Times are changing, so are the ways.

It wouldn’t hurt to ask and understand

What’s proper and what’s not.

Educate yourself.

Learn the ways of the world.

Girl, keep yourself from

Unbridled outings at night.

Nighttime outings are intoxicating

And people often forget themselves.

You may slip on a wrong path.

Once you slip, rising is difficult,

And there may be tears the rest of your life.

Girl, people have very tiny minds.

You may be humiliated before this world.

No matter how smart you might be

Or how highly educated,

In the end, girl, you are a woman.

No matter how many storms you face

Or how many hurdles you remove from your path

You may not always be in a position

Girl, to protect your honour.

Men will hover around you

Like vultures and kites.

They’re just looking for a chance

To grab you in their talons.

Education is important

To survive in this world.

So learn, enlighten yourself,

And do not trust anyone blindly.

There is a fire within you,

Keep that blazing, Girl.

Strengthen yourself like iron

And fight for all women.

Only then would you be able to survive.

The blue sky unfurls above you.

Look at it, hold your head high.
