JUGGLER by Ranjit Hoskote

You need help
standing at attention
knapsack on back
on wave-thumped turf
you’ve got this far
At first light
undeciphered time
you’re ready to start

*

Take it as it comes
juggler
Look in the spice-grinder’s vat
Mind
your tricorne head
Here comes the iron
thump
Watch it jump

*

Spar with prime numbers
Enter the castle
through a loophole
Climb
to the top of the horsemen’s tower
Listen to the light
rain on the terrace
If tigers could cry

*

Time
to call back your powers
Pounce
on saint-blessed cambric
rivers traded for silver
dormant ammonite
Look up
for what comes next
