Polysyllabic Stew by Marc Vincenz

A knack, an intuition
to unwind the cables
of mankind in a slow
guttural spread; after
a matter of course, the fuzz
of static becomes not
revelation, but rhetoric—
meanings lost in history
still embedded in the word.

—What we seek, boasts
the oracle in her fancy feathers,
are the sources
of a common culture.

The function
of mnemonics
is memory—to shatter
given fact:
the dialects & dialectics,
the anachronisms & anagrams,
the epithets & all the incantatory
repetitions—
to assimilate assumptions
in mastered oral traditions
still embedded in the word.
