The daughter of Communist activists, Malika Amar Shaikh was closely involved with the cultural world as well as the political upheavals of 1960s Bombay. Married early to Dalit poet Namdeo Dhasal, she had a tumultuous relationship with her husband, which she chronicled in her searing and controversial memoir I Want To Destroy Myself (Mala Udhvasta Vhaychai). The emotional memories of her life are echoed in her verses. Shaikh’s poetry collections include Manuspanache Bhinga Badalya Nantar, Valucha Priyakar, Mahanagar and Deharutu, all of which have met with wide critical acclaim.
