Sea of Silence

how ruthless
how beguiling
how diabolic
your mask
of calm,
O sea of silence
as you sleep
outside my
gazing window?
did Poseidon
not teach
you to be
transparent
as the clear waters
of the Sargasso?
does the salt
of your soul
not sting
when you swallow
a vessel of desperation
seeking refuge
from the wars
of religion
and territory?
from the coffins
of survival?
how calm is the sea
sleeping outside
my window.
how baleful in its calm.
and how raging
is the sea of propaganda
that divides men?
how sinister in its
serpentine slither
into bastions of peace
and compassion.

will the sleeping sea
of indifference
send waves
of revolt only when
the world is warped
beyond recognition?
how dying, how dead
is reason?
